Although a majority of American-made Zinfandels come from California, many Washington vineyards are successfully growing the grape here. The varietal holds somewhat of a cult status in the state with many wineries experimenting with it and creating wine that rivals California grown Zinfandel.
Zinfandel key characteristics include red berry fruit flavors, spice notes and high tannins. The wine pairs well with and pairs well with hearty Italian dishes including pasta and pizza but also makes a great barbeque wine in the summer.
For a taste of Northwest Zinfandels take in a bottle from Angel Vine, Kiona Vineyards & Winery, Hard Roe to Hoe or Forgeron Cellars. These four wineries make some of the best Zins in the state.
